Joe has more than a decade of experience conceptualizing, implementing and managing utility billing and submetering systems. His hands-on approach and attention to detail have given him a unique understanding of diverse utility rates, regulations and structures. His ability to craft custom solutions that fit clients’ exact needs is unmatched in the industry.

Melissa Friend, Chief Operating Officer

Melissa leads the team responsible for Synergy’s daily utility billing processes, client relations and customer service. Her strong communication skills and understanding of utility billing procedures ensure that our team meets the needs of every landlord and resident as rapidly as possible. Melissa’s professional background, which includes two decades teaching advanced algebra and accounting, enables her to address complex billing inquiries and translate responses to residents, resulting in higher collection percentages.

Company History

Synergy Utility Billing LLC was founded in 2007 as a utility billing solution for the multifamily real estate community.

Our founding members had long managed a multifamily property in the Philadelphia area, and had grown frustrated with their outsourced read-bill-collect (RBC) firm. In particular, there was a lack of transparency, accountability and proactive strategy. As a result, the Synergy leadership team decided to move utility billing in-house.

With this valuable experience on the landlord side, we ultimately decided to launch a new kind of utility billing company. We would be focused on developing custom submetering and RUBS solutions, delivering white-glove service to property owners, managers and residents, and help solve even the most complex utility issues. We believe that an RBC should do far more than simply send bills and collect a monthly fee. We want to be a part of a thriving multifamily community, freeing up landlords to focus on their core duties – and turning utility billing from a chore into an attractive resident amenity.
